We’re sure by now you’ve heard about all the fabulous CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) equipment at MakerPlace. The concept behind these machines is simple; create a design on your computer and the machine will cut out the design for you. Not sure where to start? We’ve set up a series of classes to help you turn your concept into a reality.

The Tormach 4-Axis CNC Mill not only allows you to mill a variety of metals under strict tolerances, you can also use it for small productions lines of pieces that need to be cut to the same dimensions. Our members have cut everything from jewelry pendants to gears for kinetic sculptures.

This course will outline Mach 3 control software, machine set up and calibration, importing and running files, as well as tooling systems and tool holders.

The first portion of this class will be lecture based. After the lecture, students will each have the opportunity to calibrate the machine and run a test file. There will also be an opportunity for Q & A during this time.

Suggested Prerequisites:

The first thing you’ll need to know before taking this class is how to create a .DXF file. If you have no idea what a .DXF file is or how to go about creating one we would highly suggest taking the CorelDraw: Intro to 2D Vector Graphics class first.

Required Prerequisites:

If you’re familiar with .DXF files then you can jump right into the VCarve: CNC Fundamentals class. This course covers the the ins-and-outs of VCarve, which is the software that converts your .DXF file into the G-code that the router will read to cut out your design. We highly recommend completing this course before the BOS CNC Router class.

The BOS- Vertical Mill class is required for students who have little or no experience operating milling equipment. This course covers topics like feeds and speeds which will be vital when you're first starting out on the Tormach. You'll save money not breaking bits, you'll save time understanding proper speed and feed rates, and you won't risk putting unnecessary stress on the machine (which makes us happy!).

*You must machine a part on the vertical mill and show it to the instructor before you are able to register for the Tormach CNC Mill course* Ask the front desk if you have any further questions!

Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. Our shop can be a little tricky to find so we suggest giving yourself extra time for traffic and parking.
