This workshop is designed to teach first time students the process of building a custom steel bicycle frame from concept to completion. We will focus on four major frame types: road, track, cycle cross and townie.

This will be a hands on experience.  The instructor will explain the process, provide demonstrations and guide the students as they design and build their own frames. The class will cover everything needed to design a frame, miter the tubes, weld the frame, braze on cable stops and ream/face the frame once it is complete.

The workshop is divided into 8 sessions.  The first two sessions (4 hours each) will include an overview of the course, bike geometry selection, sizing, as well as basic shop etiquette and practices.  The next six sessions (8 hours each) will encompass the construction, welding and finishing of each student’s custom bicycle.  These sessions will take place on weekends to allow ample time for students to practice welding and frame building skills outside of class if so desired.

The materials fee covers everything needed to construct a custom frame. All welding supplies, tubes and dropouts will be provided to make this a seamless experience.

At the completion of this class, each student will leave with a custom frame ready for paint.

Prerequisite: Students are required to have completed MakerPlace’s TIG welding class and Shop Orientation prior to the third class session.

The Instructor, Chris Kiesel, has been trained at the United Bicycle Institute (UBI) in Portland Oregon and has been a MakerPlace Member since 2012.  He is a Navy Helicopter Pilot and Flight Instructor at Naval Air Station North Island.
