MakerPlace is pleased to offer a limited, unique opportunity to build a beautiful, high-end acoustic guitar. Guitar craftsman Michael Britt has structured a course for beginners and advanced makers alike. Michael studied Lutherie at Lagan Lutherie School in Northern Ireland and is now bringing his expertise to MakerPlace. Progress at your own pace, using specialized jigs, with frequent 1-on-1 sessions with a personal mentor. Classes will start on Saturday, May 26th. With some prior woodworking experience, we estimate your first guitar can be constructed in approximately 20 sessions... faster with more sessions with the instructor and some "homework". Sessions may be scheduled as your time allows, but more and frequent sessions speed up the learning and crafting process.

To assist students with scheduling class time and to keep classes very small (2) delivering specialized attention, we have four separate sessions throughout the week:

Tuesday evenings 5-9

Thursday evenings 5-9

Saturday mornings 9-1 or afternoon 1-5

To assist students with scheduling "homework", each session with the instructor includes a week long MakerPlace craft room membership, and a locker to store partial results and specialized tools.

Over the course of the crafting sessions, the following topics will be addressed in approximately this order depending upon student's needs ...

•Wood selection • Preparing and bracing the top and back • cutting sound hole and making rosette • Bending sides & installing kerfing / blocks • Attaching top and back to the sides • Installing bindings and purflings • Dovetails • Neck construction • shaping neck • installing truss rod • cutting fretboard slots • gluing fretboard to neck • make your own jig for the shape of your headstock & drill holes in headstock • Fitting the neck joint • Finishing process  • sanding • sanding • little more sanding • designing and fabricating bridge • Set up...

A $350 materials fee covers all the parts, tools and instructions for the workshop.

This course can be paid in full up front, or in four installments at a rate of $625 (or $688 for non-members) per installment. Please register and email or contact us if you would like to set-up the installment option.

This course is open to beginners and advanced woodworkers.  Beginners may wish to take the Introduction to woodworking course first.
