  This is an advanced woodworking course providing hands-on instruction in proper set-up and safe, effective use of the many non-automated power wood shop tools from initial layout to project completion. Tools to be covered include: planer, jointer, belt sander, drum sander, router table, oscillating sander, mortising machine, and pocket hole jig. Students will build a project chosen to exercise skills with each tool. This course is open to the public although MakerPlace members enjoy discounted pricing.

  This course will be held over 3 sessions: 

  Monday May 20th Wednesday May 22nd and Friday May 24th  5:30PM to 8:30PM

  A $20 materials fee covers materials for the entire course. 

  Prerequisites: Intro to Wood Shop Power Tools, high school wood shop, or equivalent

  **Closed-toe shoes are a requirement**

  **Please wear appropriate shop attire: 

  Pants preferred, no loose fitting garments, hair tied back if shoulder length or longer.

  This class introduces the student to the large format (4’x8’) Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) wood router and the principles of cutting with high speed milling tools. Students will be introduced to VicEngrave software, set-up and calibration, importing and running files and vacuum table operation. Students will execute a simple hands on project to demonstrate proficiency.

  Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that members have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e., .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class. If these file types are foreign to you, you should attend the Design 2D Vector Graphics class before attending this class

  CNC Fundamentals (Vcarve) is required before attending this class.

  This class offers an introduction to the software needed to successfully operate the CNC machine (Vcarve Pro). This course will outline the workflow of taking your vector designs through tool-pathing software to generate g-code that can be used by the machine to cut student's project. Students will learn how to create designs for the CNC, basic toolpaths, cutting parameters, proper tool selection, and machining strategies. 

  Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that students have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e- .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class.   This course will introduce students to the basic safety and operation of the power tools in the wood shop. Students will have the opportunity to operate a variety of tools to complete their individual birdhouse project. Tools that will be covered in this class include the panel, table, miter, and hole saws, drill press, nail gun, hand drill, and various sanders. 

  
  

  A small materials fee covers each student's wood and consumables for their take-home project.
