Beginning sewing is a lot like advanced duct taping. If you can make it out of tape and paper you have what it takes to make it out of cloth and thread. Make tool bags, tactical clothing, trim for your woodwork, upholster your car, or go traditional and make a quilt.
This course outlines the basics of needle selection, thread types, proper fabric selection, winding a bobbin, and thread tension- all of which are important components that make up a successful project. Learn tricks that will make the machines work every time. This class is divided between lecture and lab- students will have the opportunity to sew a set of sample stitches with each machine to practice what they have learned.
Stop living in fear! The next time you have a project that involves fabric, charge forward and make it happen. Learning the basics of sewing opens a world of possibilities for future designs and projects.
A $6 material fee covers each student's thread and sample fabric.

In this class you will learn the preparation skills that will save you from hours of trial and error. We will begin by cleaning and oiling the machine; and then move step by step through material selection to quilt loading. At each step you will learn about the most common mistakes and how to avoid them. Upon completion of this class you will understand how to select backing, batting, thread and needles as well as have hands on experience with thread tension and other adjustments specific to our machine.
**This class will certify you to use our long arm quilter.
    **Closed toe shoes are required.**

Now that the hard part is done, let's learn how to quilt! This class is hands on. You will be guided through the quilting processes; securing edges, tensioning fabric, pulling up bobbin thread, locking stitches and tending batting. We will introduce stipple, meandering, pantographs, and teach the final steps of finishing and removing the quilt. With a focus on disaster prevention, you will learn exactly what is needed to quilt without a snag! We will wrap up by discussing all of the things we have learned and how they will affect the finished product.

This summer 3R’s Robotics will be hosting STEAM summer camps at MakerPlace. These week-long camps will give students ages 11-17 five full days of fun, exciting and interactive experience in the Maker activity of their choice. All of our programs are based on the values of team work, creativity and invention, empowering young Makers to follow their passions.

This week-long program will guide students through a number of introductory sewing skills in several fun craft projects. After learning about threading and using a sewing machine, introductions to pattern making and stitching techniques, our junior crafters will spend their week creating an up-cycled knapsack, a lap quilt, and an apron. A$75 material fee covers all materials from fabric to needles and each student will bring home their own beginner’s sewing machine from the camp to fuel their crafting creativity at home.

    This camp will run July 21 - 25 from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM.

This camp will be held at MakerPlace1022 W. Morena Blvd Ste H, San Diego, CA 92110

Students should bring their own lunch. Students will not be allowed to leave the facility during the lunch break unless they are picked up by a parent.

MakerPlace Members enjoy discounted pricing. **Closed toe shoes are required**
