  This class will teach the ancient art of fusing glass to metal. It will be taught with a contemporary approach to the materials and process. Creative projects may include jewelry, wall art, bowls, etc. Techniques to be explored will be stencils, screen prints, wet packing, cloisonné, liquid enamels, etching and other techniques suitable to the materials. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students are welcome.

  This course will consist of 5 sessions, approximately 3 hours each, taught over 5 consecutive weeks. 

  Class dates are as follows: April 24, May 1, May 8

  May 15, May 22 Classes will begin at 6pm and end at 9pm.

  Please note that there is also a one time $20 materials fee

  that is mandatory for all class attendees.

  Intro to the Vertical Mill will give students the basics on how to safely navigate and operate the Bridgeport Vertical Mills. This class will cover appropriate safety procedures, different tools on the machine, and how to properly set  up one's project. Students will learn the ins and outs of feeds and speeds of the machine as well as how to properly choose the right cutter for their project.

  This course will cover basic safety and operation of the Tormach 4-axis CNC mill. Students will be introduced to Mach 3 control software set up and calibration, importing and running files, Tormach tooling systems and tool holders.

  Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that members have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e., .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class. If these file types are foreign to you, you should attend the Design 2D Vector Graphics class before attending this class

  CNC Fundamentals (Vcarve) is required before attending this class.

  **Closed-toe shoes are a requirement**

  Introduction to Metalworking is an in-depth, hand-on introduction to the many basic metal working tools available at MakerPlace. Learn to make sharp bends on the brake, shear metal to size, bend pipes accurately, notch corners, punch round and square holes, make compound bends, grind, sand, and polish safely, use the vertical and horizontal band saws effectively and safely join metal parts with an introduction to TIG welding. These basic skills are valuable to all members even if you don't use metal frequently. The course will be delivered by a renowned craftsman and MakerPlace member and is open to the public although MakerPlace members receive a discount. 
  

  This course will be held over 3 sessions Monday June 3rd, Wednesday June 5th, and Friday June 7th. 

  A $20 materials fee covers materials for the entire course.

  Please bring a pair of safety glasses if you have them, if not then a pair will be provided for you.

  Students learn the basics of coloring and finishing steel surfaces using Sculpt Nouveau (http://www.scupltnouveau.com/) products such as PC, Japanese Brown, Black Magic, Clear Coat, and waxes. Students will learn how to clean and prepare the metal for finishing, how to use the patinas, clear coat and waxes for a long lasting finish. This class is open to the public but MakerPlace members enjoy discounted pricing.

  Copper Bowl Forming will teach each student how to form their own copper bowl with readily available tools and equipment using the sinking method. 

  
  

  

  The class will consist of both lecture and demonstration of the bowl forming method. It will include methods on forming copper, how to anneal copper, how to clean copper, general safety guidelines and much more!

  Each student will have their own workstation for rough forming the bowl. At the end of the workshop each student will have finished their own copper bowl and also have the knowledge and ability to continue on their own to form copper using the sinking method.
