    Copper Bowl Forming will teach each student how to form their own copper bowl with readily available tools and equipment using the sinking method. 

    The class will consist of both lecture and demonstration of the bowl forming method. It will include methods on forming copper, how to anneal copper, how to clean copper, general safety guidelines and much more!
    Each student will have their own workstation for rough forming the bowl. At the end of the workshop each student will have finished their own copper bowl and also have the knowledge and ability to continue on their own to form copper using the sinking method. 

    A small materials fee covers each student’s copper.

    This course is intended for students who have little or no 3-dimensional modeling experience, but want to learn the basics to eventually create 3D objects via rapid prototyping on the 3D printer. Topics covered include learning the SketchUp interface, drawing in SketchUp, drawing shapes and creating geometry using SketchUp tools. The emphasis of this course is to learn the basics of SketchUp and teach students how to design simple 3D models of real objects.

    This class offers an introduction to the software needed to successfully operate the CNC machine (Vcarve Pro). This course will outline the workflow of taking your vector designs through tool-pathing software to generate g-code that can be used by the machine to cut student's project. Students will learn how to create designs for the CNC, basic toolpaths, cutting parameters, proper tool selection, and machining strategies. 
    Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that students have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e- .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class. If these file types are foreign to you, it is highly recommended that you attend the Intro to 2D Vector-Based graphics class before attending this class.

    This class will teach the ancient art of fusing glass to metal. It will be taught with a contemporary approach to the materials and process. Creative projects may include jewelry, wall art, bowls, etc. Techniques to be explored will be stencils, screen prints, wet packing, cloisonné, liquid enamels, etching and other techniques suitable to the materials. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students are welcome.

    This course will consist of 5 sessions, approximately 3 hours each, taught over 5 consecutive weeks. 

    Class dates are as follows: April 23rd, April 30th, May 7th,
    May 14th,  May 21st.
    Classes will begin at 6pm and end at 9pm.

    Please note that there is also a one time $20 materials 
    fee that is mandatory for all class attendees.

    Silicone molding is an accurate, relatively easy and relatively inexpensive method for short runs (under 1000 copies) of small parts. It is typically used in the late product prototype development phase or for situations that just need a few copies such as theatrical props. This workshop will give you an excellent overview of what is possible as well as practical how-to information enabling your own mold development.

    An intensive, hands-on workshop of silicone mold material preparation, mold box fabrication sealers and releases, one and two part molds, and casting techniques. This workshop is organized as three sessions spanning:
    1. Introductory material, safety precautions, silicone characteristics, part preparation and block molds. 
    2. Material selection, release techniques, degassing and two part molds.
    3. Mass and brush on molds, two part resins and cold casting. 
    Students will build various molds and cast parts. Typically, each session will include a lecture/discussion segment held in the MakerPlace classroom then a hands-on build segment held in the paint room. Each session will include Q & A segment.

    The instructor is an extremely talented and experienced silicone mold maker and currently holds the position of Director of Mold Fabrication for Strategic Operations, LLC for over 7 years. In this and previous capacities, he has made or supervised literally thousands of molds for hyper-realistic props spanning theatrical to military training applications.

    During this workshop, we will use aerosol release agents, urethane compounds containing isocyanates and other products that may be harmful to sensitive individuals. Although we emphasize safety and provide adequate ventilation during the work sessions, you should NOT take this workshop if you suffer from asthma or other respiratory disorders or if you are allergic/sensitized to isocyanates. Students must be 18 years or older to participate in this workshop.

    This course will be held as follows:
    Friday April 25th 6PM-8PM
    Saturday April 26th 10AM-4PM
    Sunday April 27th 10AM-2PM

    A $47 materials feel covers each students necessary materials for the workshop.

Save money and do it yourself.  This class is intended to build upon the knowledge, gained in “Screen Printing Basics”.  It is highly recommended that you have an understanding of screens, inks, and techniques before taking this class.

This class will give students the basic knowledge to start creating 2D vector files for use with the laser cutters, the CNC router, and the CNC mill. In order to make the most of the CNC Router/Mill and Laser BOS classes, 2D Vector Graphics is recommended as a prerequisite for beginning users.

    This is an introductory course on the basics of creating jewelry using precious metal clay techniques. Metal clay can be easily manipulated by hand just like familiar ceramic clay. However, when fired, the metal clay binding material vaporizes and the metal particulates sinter leaving a solid metal object.

     Metal clay objects may be easily formed by hand, created with commercially available press molds, 3D printed, or provided by the student. Thus, no previous art experience or talent is required to construct beautiful jewelry or other objects with precious metal clay. 

    Although the skills taught in this course are generally appropriate to all metal clay, this class with focus on low cost bronze metal clay while skills are developing. The instructor will supply approximately 30 grams of bronze metal clay. Typically this is enough for a pair of earrings and two medium sized pendants. See photograph for objects created from approximately 30 grams of material. Students will learn skills that may be applied to working with other metal clay such as copper, silver or gold metal clay. 

    Due to the relatively lengthy firing time required, this course is divided into two sessions: in the first, the student will develop their clay objects which will then be fired. In the second session, students will finish their fired objects by polishing and/or applying patinas or dyes, and/or jewelry findings.

    This course will be held in two 3 hour sessions on consecutive weekends: Sunday May 4th and Sunday May 11th from 10 am to 1 pm.

    A materials fee of $25 covers all materials needed for the class including each students bronze metal clay, jewelry findings and finishing materials.

Print on T-shirts, signs, posters and just about anything you can think of.  Vinyl stencil is a quick easy way to get exposure to t-shirt printing using vector art.  You will learn to use the cutter/plotter, transfer vinyl stickers, and print shirts all in one class.  We will discuss tools, techniques and media.  Take advantage of hands-on projects and small class sizes. Get detailed understanding of what screen printing is and how to apply it to your project.  At Maker Place we have everything you need to make professional prints on t-shirts. In this class, we will learn to print with vinyl stencils. 
    Closed-toe shoes are required. 
    A small materials fee covers each student's pigments, ink and screens. 
    Students should bring in their own Tshirt that they would like to print on. (It wouldn't hurt to have a backup too.)

    Arduino for Beginners is a one day itensive hands on workshop for students with little to no prior Arduino or code experience. This class will lead students through the complete process of configuring, programming and building basic electronic circuits with a Arduino Uno. 

    During this workshop students will learn:

    • How to configure PC/Mac for Arduino Connection
    • History and function of code and compiliers
    • How to upload sketches to Arduino Micro Controller
    • To read and modify Arduino sketches
    • Basic C Programming
    • To use bread boards for cirucit prototyping
    • Basic electronic components
    • To light an LED utilizing Arduino control
    • To control Servo motors using Arduino control
    • To take input from multi-position switch
    This workshop will be from 9:30 am to 5pm (with an hour lunch break) in the MakerPlace classroom.

    A materials fee of $100 covers each students Arduino Uno R3 Jr Project kit, which includes: Arduino Uno R3, USB cable, battery pack, bread board, LED's, Servo, and electronic components.

    Students should bring a laptop (PC or Mac) otherwise MakerPlace can provide PC laptops for those who do not bring their own.

    Prerequisite: basic computer knowledge.

    Screen printing alternative surfaces.  Want to print on something other than a t-shirt? This is a hands on class where we will experiment with water based inks, repeating patterns, and fabrics. The skills gained will set you up to print your own upholstery, clothing or any large flat surface whether it is paper, leather or wood. Learn tricks on manage large materials and cover square footage.  Prerequisite: Advanced Screen Printing or instructor permission.   

    Closed-toe shoes are a requirement. 

    A $20 materials fee covers each student’s fabric, pigments, ink, and screens. All materials will be supplied.
