    This class will teach the ancient art of fusing glass to metal. It will be taught with a contemporary approach to the materials and process. Creative projects may include jewelry, wall art, bowls, etc. Techniques to be explored will be stencils, screen prints, wet packing, cloisonné, liquid enamels, etching and other techniques suitable to the materials. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students are welcome.

    This course will consist of 5 sessions, approximately 3 hours each, taught over 5 consecutive weeks. 

    Class dates are as follows:
    Nov 19th, Nov 26th, Dec 3rd, Dec 10th, Dec 17th.
    Classes will begin at 6pm and end at 9pm.

    Please note that there is also a one time $20 materials 
    fee that is mandatory for all class attendees.

    Copper Bowl Forming will teach each student how to form their own copper bowl with readily available tools and equipment using the sinking method. 
    The class will consist of both lecture and demonstration of the bowl forming method. It will include methods on forming copper, how to anneal copper, how to clean copper, general safety guidelines and much more!
    Each student will have their own workstation for rough forming the bowl. At the end of the workshop each student will have finished their own copper bowl and also have the knowledge and ability to continue on their own to form copper using the sinking method. 

    A small materials fee covers each student’s copper.

    This class gives students a comprehensive introduction to 2D vector-based graphics using the popular CorelDraw software. This class will give students the basic knowledge to start creating 2D vector files for use with the laser cutters, the CNC router, and the CNC mill. In order to make the most of the CNC Router/Mill and Laser BOS classes, 2D Vector Graphics is recommended as a prerequisite for beginning users.

    Screen printing basics. Make stuff! Print on T-shirts, signs, posters and just about anything you can think of.  Vinyl stencil is a quick easy way to get exposure to t-shirt printing using vector art.  You will learn to use the cutter/plotter, transfer vinyl stickers, and print shirts all in one class.  We will discuss tools, techniques and media.  Take advantage of hands-on projects and small class sizes. Get detailed understanding of what screen printing is and how to apply it to your project.  At Maker Place we have everything you need to make professional prints on t-shirts. In this class, we will learn to print with vinyl stencils. 
    Closed-toe shoes are required. 
    A small materials fee covers each student's pigments, ink and screens. 
    Students should bring in their own Tshirt that they would like to print on. (It wouldn't hurt to have a backup too.)
    Due to the extensive amount of information covered in this course, the instructor will provide a demo design for students to practice with.

    This course is intended for students who have little or no 3-dimensional modeling experience, but want to learn the basics to eventually create 3D objects via rapid prototyping on the 3D printer. Topics covered include learning the SketchUp interface, drawing in SketchUp, drawing shapes and creating geometry using SketchUp tools. The emphasis of this course is to learn the basics of SketchUp and teach students how to design simple 3D models of real objects.

    Intermediate Woodworking will expand the student's knowledge of wood shop safety and the proper setup and use of specific woodworking machinery. Machines covered in this class will include the joiner, table saw, planer and router. 
     
    During this hands-on, two day class students will be creating their very own wood cutting board while learning effective glue up methods, proper sanding techniques and efficient router setup. 

    A $20 materials fee covers each student's wood and consumables for their take-home project.

    This course will be held Tuesday December 2nd and Wednesday December 3rd from 5 PM to 7 PM.

    Prerequisite: Prior completion of Intro to Wood Shop Power Tools is highly encouraged.

    This class offers an introduction to the software needed to successfully operate the CNC machine (Vcarve Pro). This course will outline the workflow of taking your vector designs through tool-pathing software to generate g-code that can be used by the machine to cut student's project. Students will learn how to create designs for the CNC, basic toolpaths, cutting parameters, proper tool selection, and machining strategies. 
    The VCarve class is a prerequisite for the CNC Router and the Tormach CNC Mill.

    Suggested Prerequisites for this Course: It is strongly recommended that students have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e- .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class. If these file types are foreign to you, it is highly recommended that you attend the Intro to 2D Vector class before attending this class.

    Personalize and laser cut/etch your very own unique holiday tree ornaments.  Using any of several templates, this course introduces students to a variety of modern fabrication techniques including two dimensional drawing with computer assistance and use of laser cutter/engravers.  Under the watchful eye of one of Santa’s elves, students will first customize an ornament template for family names and/or dates, then create a file to transfer the design to one of MakerPlace’s five laser cutter/engravers.  In the laser workshop, elves will assist students with cutting and engraving acrylic via intense beams of laser light.  All good little boys and girls will go home with at least one custom ornament.

    A $10 material fee covers each student's acrylic. 

    Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of neither laser operation nor 2D drawing is required for this course.  All materials, PCs, software and memory sticks are provided.  This course is not sufficient qualification for independent laser engraver/cutter use.  The Laser Operation and 2D drawing courses are recommended for further study.

    This is a two session class on the many ways to use the round braiding technique to make amazing wire jewelry for gifts (or to reward yourself for getting your holiday shopping done early!)  Not only is this skill remarkably fast and easy to learn, it the gift that keeps on giving as you’ll never again be at a loss for a unique gift!  No soldering is required to make these very intricate and elegant pieces of jewelry.  In the first session we’ll be focusing on bracelets. Students will learn the following:

    - The basic round braiding with wire technique

    - How to work with different types and gauges (sizes) of wire

    - How to add beads to your wire bracelets and jewelry

    - Ways to easily color the wire

    In the second session, we’ll be learning the many variations, tips, and tricks that can be done with this versatile technique to make necklaces and earrings. Look forward to learning how to:

    - Make round braided cone shapes

    - “Split” the braid into multiple smaller braids

    - Handle braid end wires in multiple ways for clasping and finishing jewelry

    - Change the shape of your braids using a simple vise

    - Combine multiple types of wires for complex looking braids

    This is a 2 session class: December 6th and December 7th from 5:00 - 8:00 PM

    Class Fee: $100 plus a $25 materials fee that includes all the wire and findings to complete 2-4 projects. Please note: If you’ve already taken Faux Silver Bracelets, you can just sign up for the second session only of this workshop for $50 plus $15 materials fee (please contact the front desk if you would like to only sign up for 2nd half of this course, 619-225-7288)

    Personalize and deep etch your very own unique holiday plates perfect for serving holiday cookies and similar goodies or special gift giving. Using any of several templates, this course introduces students to a variety of modern fabrication techniques including two dimensional drawing with computer assistance, use of laser cutter/engravers and the sand blaster/etcher.  Under the watchful eye of one of Santa’s elves, students will first customize a holiday themed template design for family names and/or dates, and apply a mask to the selected plate.  In the laser workshop, elves will assist students with cutting the etching mask using intense beams of laser light.  Students will then take the masked plates to the sand blaster for deep etching the customized design into the plates.  All good little boys and girls will go home with at least one customized plate. 

    This class has a $10 material fee.

    Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of either laser operation or 2D drawing is required for this course.  All materials, PCs, software and memory sticks are provided.  This course is not sufficient qualification for independent laser engraver/cutter use.  The Laser Operation and 2D drawing courses are recommended for further study.

    This class is intended to teach introductory monster making skills to the devious, nefarious and those just wanting to have some fun. Each student will design and bring to life their own talking monster through the following evil process:

    1.     Devising the evil plan: Will the monster be blood sucking? Will it need to have an extra-large mouth for eating small children? Will it be the sock monster that hides in the dryer? These are difficult questions that will need to be answered prior to proceeding to monster making step #2.
    2.     Monster pattern making: Instructions on how to create a one of a kind basic pattern.
    3.     Making the monster talk with a recordable, button activated board.
    4.     Fabrication of the beast: Cutting, sewing, stuffing and electrocuting (this is dependent on the type of monster…obviously).

    A $20 material fee covers each student's fabric, thread, intestines, vocal cords and other important bits and pieces. 

    This class is intended for ages 13+, evil geniuses under the age of 13 will need a parent or guardian to assist them.

    Learn how to make the ten minute table runner! A quick and easy gift for holiday parties, hostess gifts, or secret Santa. 

    This project is designed for the person who has never used a sewing machine before.  We also welcome experts who just want to have fun.  This is a great way to get an idea of how sewn objects are planned and executed. 

    Our super sewing elf (identifiable by his red nose and pointy shoes) will oversee all projects and help students familiarize themselves with the sewing machines. If you'd like to add more custom elements to your project be sure to check out our Intro to Embroidery course and learn to use the 6 needle computerized embroidery machine. 

    This class has an $11 material fee. 

    Materials are available if you want yours to look just like the sample above, or bring a half yard and a third of a yard of the fabric of your choice to create your own custom look! 

    This is a beginner course so there are no prerequisites.

    In this course our super sewing elf will teach students how to construct bi-fold wallets our of fabric. Not only do they make great gifts, you can use them to organize all your credit cards to streamline your holiday shopping! This class is a great way to learn about finishing techniques and learn about general fabric construction.  Beginners are welcome and our super sewing elf will be happy to assist you with any procedure that you may find intimidating. 

    There is an $11 material fee for this course. 

    There will be materials available but you are more than welcome to bring in fabrics of your choice (1/4 yard of 2 coordinating fabrics). Please be aware that this specific wallet works best with materials comparable to denim and lighter.  If you'd like to add more custom elements to your project be sure to check out our Intro to Embroidery course and learn to use the 6 needle computerized embroidery machine.

    In this course students will learn how to navigate, sketch, solid model, sculpt, assemble and render realistic images in Autodesk Fusion 360. Students will leave with an understanding of direct modeling, dimension sketches, T-spline bodies, functional design and final product rendering. There is a lot to learn in Fusion 360, so this course is intended to serve as a "jumping off" point to get started and help with all aspects of the product in some sense. With this course, students will be able to dive deeper into the areas of Fusion 360 that are most interesting. 

    This class will cover topics around: 

    1. 3D surfaces and solid modeling

    2. 3D rendering and visualization

    3. Assemblies and motion studies

    4. Drawing creation

    5. Fabrication

    This course is divided into 3 parts:

    Part 1: Tuesday Dec. 9th from 6 PM-9 PM. 

    Part 2: One hour Q&A, Friday Dec. 12th from 7 PM-8 PM. 

    Part 3: Wednesday Dec. 17th from 6 PM-9 PM.

    Prerequisites: 

    Knowledge of using a 3-button mouse, as well as experience with CAD modeling software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, Sketch-Up, etc. is an advantage. No traditional 3D CAD modeling necessary, but preferred. 

    Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops (please see software requirements below). **Students bringing their own laptops will need to download the Autodesk Fusion 360 software prior to the class. The trial or paid version can be downloaded by visiting: Autodesk Fusion 360 website

    MakerPlace will provide a PC laptop with the downloaded software for students who do not bring their own.

    Software requirements for laptops: Apple Mac OS X 10.8 or later, Microsoft Windows 7 or later, CPU: 64 bit processor (32-bit not supported), Memory: 3GB RAM (4GB recommended). An internet connection (WiFi provided at MakerPlace). Hard drive space of approx. 300mb, for the Fusion 360 client. Graphics card: All graphics cards on supported hardware (except Intel GMA X3100). Pointing device: Microsoft-compliant mouse, Apple mouse, Magic mouse, MacBook Pro.

    Adult Arduino for Beginners is a two day intensive hands on workshop for students with little to no prior Arduino or code experience. This class will lead students through the complete process of configuring, programming and building basic electronic circuits with an Arduino Uno. 

    During this workshop students will learn:

    • How to configure PC/Mac for Arduino Connection
    • History and function of code and compilers
    • How to upload sketches to Arduino Micro Controller
    • To read and modify Arduino sketches
    • Basic C Programming
    • To use bread boards for circuit prototyping
    • Basic electronic components
    • To light an LED utilizing Arduino control
    • To control Servo motors using Arduino control
    • To take input from multi-position switch
    This workshop will be held over 2 sessions: Wednesday December 10th from 6-9 PM and Thursday December 11th from 6-9 PM. 

    A materials fee of $100 covers each students Arduino Uno R3 kit, which includes: Arduino Uno R3, USB cable, battery pack, bread board, LED's, Servo, and electronic components.

    Students should bring a laptop (PC or Mac) otherwise MakerPlace can provide PC laptops for those who do not bring their own.

    This course, presented by one of Santa’s most experienced wood-working elves, will lead each student through the steps required to produce an exotic wooden cutting board for their own use or special gifting.  This will expand the student's knowledge of wood shop safety, proper setup and use of woodworking machinery leading to the construction of a fabulous, exotic, and unique cutting board.

    During this hands-on, two day class, students will craft their very own wood cutting board while learning effective glue up methods, proper sanding techniques and efficient router setup. The first day covers most of the fabrication through glue-up.  The second day is mostly devoted to fine finishing.  Machines covered in this class will include the joiner, table saw, planer and router. 

    A $20 materials fee covers each student's wood and consumables for their take-home project.

    This course will be held Wednesday December 17th and Thursday December 18th from 6 PM to 8 PM.

    Prerequisite: Prior completion of Intro to Wood Shop Power Tools is not required but recommended. Before independent use of wood tools.

    Ever wonder how they make those amazing displays of holiday lights?Now is your chance to learn! Arduino Holiday Light Bot is one of  the 3R's Arduino for Beginners Series. This class is perfect starter course or refresher for those with some Arduino skill. Learn to use an Arduino Mega to control up to 16 Strings of Holiday Lighting synchronized to the music of your choosing. Light up the house, animate your tree or dream up your own project and delight the children in your life.

    Prerequisites: Basic computer skills.

    A $100 materials fee covers each students 3Rs Arduino Holiday Light Bot Kit.

    Students are asked to bring their own laptop (Mac or PC) for the class. If they are not able to bring their own personal laptop, MakerPlace will provide one for them.

    This is an intro class for building your own Quadcopter and learning the basics on how to fly it. Each student will receive a kit assembled from high quality components. Designed as a DYI project using the latest technology in the RC community, it is a simple build process and allows for future additions. Students will receive everything needed to assemble the quad and get flying: the radio, battery charger, and two lithium batteries. With 9in props and 4 200watt brushless motors there will be plenty of power for a small play load (such as a Gopro camera). Included will be a GPS system and an open source 8 bit Flight controller to allow for maximum flexibility. The frame is a popular DJI DYI kit and is extremely strong and replacement parts are easy to come by. There was a price increase from the previous kits as these kits have higher quality parts and the come with GPS, the most requested additions to the builds, as well some other goodies that make them well worth it.

    This is a beginner class and therefore no prior programming knowledge is needed. 

    A materials fee of $480 includes each student’s materials: quad kit, radio, 2 batteries,  charger, and GPS.

    Students must register and pay before December 5th so the instructor can order the correct number of kits. 
    Students cannot reschedule or be refunded for the class beyond that date as the kits cannot be returned once they are ordered.
