    This class introduces the student to the large format (4’x8’) Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) wood router and the principles of cutting with high speed milling tools. Students will be introduced to VicEngrave software, set-up and calibration, importing and running files and vacuum table operation. Students will execute a simple hands on project to demonstrate proficiency.

    Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that members have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e., .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class. If these file types are foreign to you, you should attend the Design 2D Vector Graphics class before attending this class

    CNC Fundamentals (Vcarve) is required before attending this class.

    CNC Plasma Cutting is a process that is used to cut sheet metal of varying thicknesses using a plasma torch. The plasma is hot enough to melt the metal while blowing molten metal away from the cut. When attached to a CNC, operators have the ability to cut out elaborate designs in sheet metal up to 3/4 inch thick.

    The Intro to the Plasma CNC class will teach students basic operation of the CNC plasma as well as the handheld. Prior to taking this class, students should have the ability to create a .DXF file. The first part of the course will cover how to properly import files and settings into the plasma cutting software. After an overview of the software, students will learn how to safely set-up and operate the machine.

    Proper safety measures are vital when operating the Plasma CNC. Students will be taught standards and procedures that will be essential for proper safety and use of the machine.
    Along with demonstrations students will be given hands on experience.

    A $25 materials fee covers each student’s plasma consumables and metal stock.

    All attendees are required to wear appropriate attire: long sleeved natural fiber shirts, long pants, closed-toe shoes (leather shoes preferred), long hair must be pulled back, no jewelry or baggy clothing.

    Prerequisite: Ability to create a .DXF file.

    Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that students have a basic knowledge of how to create vector-based files (i.e- .ai, .eps, .dxf, .dwg, .cdr file extensions) before taking this class.
